Chiropractic Care and your Cardiovascular System

A healthy heart can provide you with years of a productive active lifestyle. Diet, exercise and stress management are probably the more common things people think about when it comes to having a healthy heart. Have you ever considered chiropractic care for your heart also? Wouldn’t it be great to help your heart at the same time you’re helping your body?

Well there are some studies that show there is a special type of response when a chiropractic adjustment is delivered to the spine. A somato-visceral response to the
cardiovascular system can occur; which is an event (ie, adjustment) in a somatic structure (ie. spine) result in a reflex change in a visceral organ (ie. heart). This is possible because the nervous system sends millions of instructions from your brain down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue. If you have “subluxations” in the areas of the spine which irritate the nerves that specifically help to control the
cardiovascular system; the organs and tissues affected by those nerves can be compromised in their function.

The majority of nerves that help to supply the heart come from your upper thoracic spine (T1-4); another source is from the upper cervical region (C1-3) in your neck, which helps to control your blood pressure.

So, if you have any cardiovascular health problems there is a high chance of your spine having subluxations within those areas. Chiropractors are experts at finding and removing spinal subluxations, which allows proper nerve flow throughout the body aiding in a healthier body and even heart!

Hypertension: Studies on Various Heart Conditions Improved By Chiropractic Adjustments:

Goodman, 1992; subjects with C1 adjustments for 2 months had average reductions
in BP of 166/94 mmHg to 137/84 mmHg.

Dysrhythmias:
Palmer, 1949; subjects were adjusted for 1 month. Pre- and post-treatment EKG’s were conducted. Results were significant improvements with EKG readings.

Angina:
Rogers & Rogers, 1976; Chiropractic adjustments immediately decreased coronary
angiospasm as confirmed by an-giography and EKG.
