How Long to Nap for the Best Benefits

I recently came across a great article on napping times and which length of time was ideal based on which benefits you were looking.

Here are a few highlights to the article which could be useful the next time you want to get a quick shut eye:

For a boost in engery and alertness - 10 to 20 mins of napping was ideal

For cognitave processing memory (ie. remembering facts, names and faces) - 60 mins of napping was ideal

For increased emotional and procedural memory (ie. riding a bike, playing the piano) and creativity - 90 mins of sleep was ideal and likely include a full-sleep cycle

The article did mention that napping for 30 mins wasn't very effective as it produced a sleep inertia, a hangover-like groggy like feeling which could last up to 30 mins after the nap. I have personally experienced this and have regretted myself after the fact for having napped in the first place.

So whichever desired effect you are looking for; use this information to help guide you as it can help prevent you from feeling worse off once you've woken up.
