Noteworthy Research and Development Report
Exercise & Back Pain Studies:
Two reviews just published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine concluded that supervised, individually tailored exercise programs such as stretching & strengthening exercises are the most effective for improving pain & function in adults with chronic low back pain. The study found that exercise plays a lesser role in mitigating acute low back pain.
Drug Spending Climbs:
A report released in April 2005 by the Canadian Institute for Health Information shows that total spending on drugs in Canada is expected to have reached $21.8 billion last year—an increase of 8.8% over the previous year and five times the amount spend on drugs in 1985. Drugs expenditure per person is highest in Ontario ($732) & New Brunswick ($718) & lowest in British Columbia ($542) & Saskatchewan ($615).
Gaining Weight Leads to More Weight Gain:
According to the Statistics Canada National Population Health Survey, once people are overweight, they are more likely to pack on even more pounds. The Stats Can study found that almost one-quarter of Canadians who were overweight in 1994/95 had become obese by 2002/03. The study supports findings from previous research that it appears easier not to put on weight in the first place than it is to take it off.
** Studies were taken from the Spring/Summer 2005 issue of The Canadian Chiropractic
