Back Safe Gardening Tips

As we roll into the summer months, more and more of us are turning to our garden as a way to relax, de-stress, and spend time outdoors. Seeing the fruits of your labour turn into a delicious crop is something everyone can appreciate.

Unfortunately, one area of gardening that is often overlooked is how hard it can be on your back. If you are spending hours of the day weeding, lifting soil bags, and bending over to examine plants and crops, it can cause a myriad of issues to your back.

Fortunately, while there are a lot of gardening tasks that can present a hazard for the back, there are also many things we can do to protect our backs when working in our gardens.

Lift With Your Knees, Not Your Back

One of the most important things anyone can do is lift with their legs, not their back. When you have to carry a heavy planter, soil bag, or equipment, ensure you are lifting using your legs and not your back.

Not only will lifting your back give you more power, but it will also prevent the potential of strains from occurring.

Raised Beds Can Be a Great Option

One of the more demanding parts of gardening is being forced to squat or bend while you weed your plants. Unfortunately, it is hard to avoid, but a great way to limit the amount of time spent on your knees is by using raised beds.

Raised beds can be great for providing a foundation for bigger plants or crops, but they are also an excellent way to work on a level platform that can further reduce the need to bend or squat.

When it comes to gardening, it is important to follow these back safe tips. If any injuries occur this summer, make sure to contact us at Total Care Health. We can help you remedy any ailment.
