Falls are Preventable: Don’t let a fall keep you down!

Falls and Preventable: Don't let a fall keep you down!

Our independance is something we all value, especially as we grow older and health concerns may begin to limit our activities. One simple way you can help protect your independence is by reducing your risk of slips and falls. Older Canadians have a high risk of falling.

Every year, one in three Canadians over age 65 will fall – injuries such as hip, wrist and pelvic fractures are common in this age group and can have a lasting impact on quality of life. There are easy things you can do to help prevent falls. Most falls happen in the home so that is the first place to start taking precautions.

THE BATHROOM
• Use a non-slip mat inside and outside the tub or shower.
• Install grab bars by the toilet and in the tub and shower area.
• Install a raised toilet seat to make getting on and off easier.

THE KITCHEN
• Replace loose scatter mats with rugs that have rubber backing.

• Keep everyday items on shelves within easy reach.

• Make sure no extension cords cross your path.

• Never climb on a chair or stool to reach for something. Always ask for assistance.

STAIRWAYS

• Keep stairways clear of clutter.

• Repair loose railings.

• Secure loose or wrinkled carpet.

• Make sure you can see where you are going if you are carrying something up or down stairs.

THE REST OF THE HOUSE

• Have a clear path from the bedroom to the bathroom. Use night lights along the way.

• Make sure tables and lamps are stable.

• Always sit down when putting on or taking off shoes and clothing.

• Don’t rush to answer the phone. Use a cordless phone whenever possible and carry it with you.
